Microsoft Improves Dark Mode for Word

(Image: Microsoft)

Microsoft has announced that the dark mode offered for Word is being improved and allowing for an even darker experience.

Posting on the Office Insider blog, Ali Forelli, Program Manager on the Word team working on Accessibility features, explains how a new option is being added for dark mode users.

It's already possible to make the ribbon and toolbars dark, but the document remained bright white.

A new features allows the page to go dark, too, with the text adjusting accordingly to remain visible.

To enable dark mode, navigate to File > Account > Office Theme > Black.

You can also toggle between black and white page backgrounds by clicking View > Switch Modes.

When the document canvas color is dark, the rest of the colors used for text and graphics will be altered automatically.

As Forelli explains, "reds, blues, yellows, and other colors will be shifted slightly to mute the overall effect of the color palette and look more visually pleasing with the new dark background."

The dark mode improvements are available to users on the Insider Beta Channel who are running Version 2012 (Build 13518.10000).

It seems unlikely this is a feature update that will get rejected, so Word users should expect it to roll out in a future update so they can enjoy a truly dark experience if they so choose.
