At the 2019 National Auctioneers Association (NAA) International Auctioneer Championship (IAC) held Friday, July 12 in New Orleans, Louisiana, three questions were asked of the contestants.
Here, we note those three questions and our answers to them:

What leadership skills do you possess that would benefit the NAA?
- What have you learned about yourself by competing in the IAC competition?

Being the champion comes with a great deal of responsibility.
What topics have you prepared to present as the new champion as part of the speaker’s bureau if you were to become champion starting tomorrow?
Recently NAA launched a volunteer program to register for committees and leadership in order to enhance the member experience.
What leadership skills do you possess that would benefit the NAA?
What is unique about this particular contest is that every single contestant that came across this stage today has leadership skills which would benefit the NAA.
By competing, contestants learn patience, humility, self-reflection and truth — which are key characteristics for virtually any leader.
By winning this contest, the champion carries an additional burden to help as many other auctioneers realize the value of competing and what this contest does to improve not only each of us, but the industry overall.
What have you learned about yourself by competing in the IAC competition?
It was ABC’s Wide World of Sports that coined the phrase “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” By winning this contest, we learn that thrill, but not winning also provides us a victory in that we get to compete again.
The competition allows us to self-improve and work to be even better next year.
I think every competitor — even the champions — learn they can and should always strive to be better auctioneers and even better community leaders.

What topics have you prepared to present as the new champion as part of the speaker’s bureau if you were to become champion starting tomorrow?
I think it’s fair to say that most who attend auction school are inspired by one or more champion auctioneers who have succeeded in this business.
As the champion, I would be expected to inspire younger auctioneers to participate in this contest as well as remain active in their state association and the National Auctioneers Association.
Those programs would necessarily include bid-calling techniques and tips, competition insights and how those skills can lead to very fulfilling work as an auctioneer around this country and across the globe.
Daxdi, Auctioneer, CAI, CAS, AARE has been an auctioneer and certified appraiser for over 30 years.
His company’s auctions are located at: Daxdi, Auctioneer, RES Auction Services and Goodwill Columbus Car Auction.
He serves as Distinguished Faculty at Hondros College, Executive Director of The Ohio Auction School, an Instructor at the National Auctioneers Association’s Designation Academy and America’s Auction Academy.
He is faculty at the Certified Auctioneers Institute held at Indiana University and is approved by the The Supreme Court of Ohio for attorney education.
