Auctioneers: Stay in your lane

Auctioneers should be auctioneers.

Dentists should be dentists.

Doctors should be doctors.

Attorneys should be attorneys.

In other words, stay in your lane?

My dentist is a wonderful person and dentist, who told me about changing my diet a bit (doctor?) My doctor suggested my corporation could pay my medical bill instead of me personally (attorney?)

My attorney told me he thought acetaminophen was better than ibuprofen for tooth pain (dentist?) Could an auctioneer comment about an auction legal issue — generally, and not offer specific legal advice to anyone?

Pete Williams has been a television correspondent for NBC News since 1983, covering legal issues, the courts including the Supreme Court and related.

He talks about and analyzes the law almost every night on NBC News.

He is not an attorney and rather a journalist.

Did you know that there is no requirement Supreme Court of the United States justices be attorneys? In fact, one doesn’t have to be an attorney to talk about the law, analyze the law, research the law, or write about the law.

Relatedly, I serve as Distinguished Faculty at Hondros College where I teach law including pre-license and continuing education.

I also teach classes on auctioneering, appraisal, social media, civil rights, and other topics.

I’m also approved by The Supreme Court of Ohio for attorney education.

But there are attorneys teaching auctioneers about auctioneering? Stay in your lane? Really? Actually, I’m fine with anyone teaching auctioneers about something if they are good presenters and have (their own) good material.

Daxdi, Auctioneer, CAI, CAS, AARE has been an auctioneer and certified appraiser for over 30 years.
